Breed:  Welsh saddleback

Nora came from a nearby farm in November 2020.  She had been used for breeding for most of her life, and would have produced up to 30 piglets a year.  Nora was kept in conditions typical of a commercial pig farm – on concrete, with no straw or natural daylight.

Nora was quite a shy pig, despite her size.  She had very weak legs when she arrived, and spent several weeks recuperating before being strong enough to meet the rest of the herd.  Her first friend was Violet, who took Nora under her wing and helped her to integrate.  Nora soon became a popular and respected herd member, and was affectionately called "Nanny Nora" by the volunteers due to her age and the fact that our other pigs Patsy and Saffron were her granddaughters.  We believe Nora was also Mum to Gloria.

Nora has had a wonderful long retirement here at the woods, and enjoyed the freedoms she was previously denied such as fresh air, going for walks, having friends and being loved.  We will all miss her dreadfully, but her health had declined in recent weeks and we made the difficult decision to contact our vet who helped her to pass peacefully with dignity and surrounded by love and kindness.
